Up & Cross-selling recommendations are essential for increasing your average order value (AOV). By displaying relevant alternatives or matching items directly on the product page, you help the customer make a choice or complete their order.
In this article, we explain step-by-step how to set up Up & Cross-selling, from creating a new rule and defining the source item to selection, layout, sorting, and grouping with group-keys.
Creating a new rule
Navigate to Recommendations in the Tweakwise App. Here you will see an overview of all recommendation types. You can easily filter the list by clicking on the 'Type' column.
Click on New and select Up and Cross selling.
Give the rule a clear name.
Set the desired number of results you want to display.
Defining the Source Item
Unlike 'Featured' recommendations, you start Up & Cross-selling with the Source Item. This is where you determine the context: which products does this rule apply to?
Set the conditions that the product the visitor is currently viewing must meet. Think of:
Category: Belongs to a specific category (e.g., 'Clothing').
Attribute conditions: You can select as many attributes as conditions as you like.
Example: A specific brand or certain colors that the source item must or must not have.
Example: A certain price range the source product must fall within or outside of.
The rule is only activated when a visitor views a product that meets these specific requirements.
Selection
This is the most important part. Here you determine exactly which products will be shown as recommendations.
Category: Select the category from which Tweakwise should draw the recommended products.
Variation: Use variation (e.g., one item per subcategory or brand) to prevent your recommendation block from being filled with identical products.
Attribute conditions: This is the core of your logic. You can use fixed values (e.g., Color equals Blue), but also dynamic filters:
Equal to source: Automatically show products of the same brand as the source item.
Less than / Greater than or equal to source: Ideal for upselling; show similar products that are cheaper or more expensive than the current product.
Falls between (percentage): Provide a specific numerical value, for example, for price.
Not equal to source: Force variation by showing products that specifically do not have the same attribute as the source item.
Layout
Just like with Featured Recommendations, you can optionally adjust the Layout here to pin products to specific positions.
Manage positions: You can assign specific components to certain positions in the grid. Click on a position to select a component and use drag & drop to change the order. Use the three dots to edit, duplicate, or delete components.
Builder templates: You can link an existing Builder template for a uniform look. Want to start from scratch? Simply unlink the template to reset the layout.
Sorting
Finally, choose a Sorting rule to determine the final order of the recommended products.
Grouping with Group-keys
Do you want to bundle multiple rules into one block (e.g., "Complete the look")? Use Group-keys.
By giving different rules (e.g., a rule for blazers, one for tops, and one for bags) the same unique code, they are combined into a single API call. Use the Priority setting to determine the order of the rules within this group.
