Synonyms

A synonym is a word that means roughly the same as one or multiple other words.

The use of synonyms

In Tweakwise, we use synonyms for words that your customers may call differently than the webshop does. For example, a customer might search for a tunic, while the webshop calls it a dress. In that case, you can create a synonym for tunic and dress.

The Synonyms submodule can be used to correct typos that aren't corrected by autocorrection, such as L'Oréal and Loreal.

Interaction with search algorithms

The Word search algorithm takes synonyms into account in the following ways:

  • Synonyms work on all properties that are configured in the algorithm
  • Synonyms also work in combination with other terms in the search phrase (for example: Dress - Tunic; when you search for green tunic > it will still work)
  • Synonyms don't work on parts of a word but are split at spaces. (for example: Grand Theft Auto > gta, doesn't bring up 'hangtags' as a result)
  • Synonyms don't work on synonyms longer than three words
  • Synonyms enrich the product data.
  • Synonyms consisting of multiple terms only go off for the products where the terms occur consecutively in the data. So when you want to create a synonym for 'Black Pants' <> 'Dark Jeans', where 'Black Pants' is in the data, it is important that 'Black 'Pants' is in one attribute. The synonym will not work when 'Pants' is in the categories data and 'Black' is in the color attribute.

Types of synonyms

We've divided the synonyms submodule into 3 types. The regular synonyms, one-way synonyms and the AI-synonyms. The first one is used when you have terms that are the same in any which way. The second kind is used when there are certain search results that you want to have turn up with a certain search term, but which aren't synonyms in both ways. The AI synonyms are generated with AI to provide search results without a match, with a matching synonym. With which the original search phrase still gives search results.
The AI synonyms are always one-way synonyms and can be recognized by the icon Tweakwise Copilot icoon.png.

In the Synonyms module you can easily view and edit set synonyms and approve or reject AI synonyms via the overview.

Regular Synonyms:

Through our Autopilot for Synonyms, suggestions will be made on the set synonyms. This will give you useful suggestions that you can easily add to the current synonyms with 1 click. These are always identified by the AI autopilot icon AI voorgestelde synoniemen logo.png.

One-way synonyms:

Here you can specify the keyword your visitors are searching for and then under synonyms you can specify what you want your visitors to find. For example, you want customers to find “bag” when they search for “tote” but not to find “tote” when searched for “bag.

lf the 'sourceTerm' field is filled, you are dealing with a one-way synonym.
If it is empty, then it is a regular synonym. Approved AI synonyms are always one-way synonyms and therefore provided with a 'sourceTerm'.

If there are multiple values, they are separated by a pipeline ( | ).
