What are synonyms, and when do I use them?
A synonym is a word that has a similar definition as one or multiple other words. In Tweakwise, you can use synonyms to cover words for which your customers might have a different definition. Your customer might be searching for trousers, while it is called pants in the web shop. In this case, you can create a synonym for trousers - pants.

You can also use the synonyms module to cushion typos and other mistakes that aren't covered by autocorrection, like L’Oréal and Loreal.

The Word search algorithm takes all active synonyms into account based on the following rules:

  • Synonyms work on all configured properties of the algorithm
  • Synonyms also work when the search phrase contains other words (a search for ‘jeans’ and ‘dark jeans’ will both provide the same results)
  • Synonyms don’t work on partial words, but are divided by spaces (for example: bonnet > hat will not provide any results for ‘hatchet’ but will provide results for ‘sun hat’)
  • Synonyms don’t work if the synonym contains more than three words

Synonyms also work for conjugations of a word. This means you don't need to create separate synonyms for plural and singular words.

It is also possible to create synonyms to cover words that may contain spaces, for example sunhat <> sun hat. This way the most relevant results will appear at the top of the search results.
