Best practices for Personal Merchandising are strongly reliant on the branch that your webshop is on. Though, there are some overall best practices to start with. In particular where personalized components are concerned.

There are two distinguished types of customers in different branches:

  1. Customers that make a lot of repeat purchases
  2. Customers that don't make repeat purchases but are there to be inspired

For both of these types, there is a best practice:

  1. You should use the 'Previously bought' component in your search. In the case of a supermarket: when a customer searches for 'milk' and they always buy the same brand of milk, then that product will appear on top.
  2. If a customer comes to be inspired, you will want to see what happens in the journey in your webshop. It's then relevant to see what they last viewed and what's related to that product. You can arrange your grid using the 'Last viewed' and 'Based on last viewed' components. This can be set up for the first rows of the search results and the first rows of the lister page.
    It's also possible and relevant to differentiate per category. Each category has different relevant properties to use for showing related products.

Furthermore, personal components should mainly be placed on the first row of a grid.
