Search algorithms

This algorithm checks whether the entire search query matches the name of a category. It will only search through categories that are underneath the current category.

How Category Match works

If the visitor is in the English shop, the algorithm won't check if the English version of the category is a match. All products from the matching category will be shown. If the are multiple category matches, this step will be skipped. You can set whether a corresponding sorting template should be used and if you want to use conjugations and synonyms.

Note: This is no redirect. Products from that category are simply being shown.

The algorithm takes the entire category tree into account and will also find a match when a combination is made. For example:

Under Default Category - Website - Netherlands there are two Jeans categories. When someone searches for 'jeans' in that category, there will not be a match. This is because there is no unique match so it's unclear which products should be shown. If someone searches for 'Women jeans' there be a category match on the Jeans category under Women.

Use sort template of the matching category

You may have set up a separate sorting template for a certain category. This checkbox lets you choose to use the sorting template of the matching category.

Use conjugations

Check this box if you want conjugations of an existing category to be a match. For example:

You've got a Shirts category. When a visitor searches for 'shirt', this will be matched to the Shirts category.

Note: it's currently impossible to match a category with a conjugations longer than one word. Example: there is a category by the name of Tv cabinets. This category will only be found when you search for 'tv cabinets' while 'tv cabinet' is not a match.

Use synonyms

Do you want categories to match when a synonym of an existing category is searched? Then check this box. For example:

You created a synonym for Pants - Jeans. You have a Jeans category and a visitor searches for 'pants', then they will be matched to the Jeans category.

Excluding categories

Lastly, there's the option to exclude categories from the algorithm. If there are categories where you don't want any matches to occur, simply add them to the list of exclusions.
